Curatorial Note

Both paintings begin with the same impulse: to let an element — water, then fire — build its own surface in paint. Colour is laid on thick and worked by knife and brush until texture, not outline, carries the image. “The Ocean” moves from stillness into breaking foam; “Nature’s Whisper” gathers heat, flower, and flight into a single red field. Two studies of one idea, made to be seen in person and lived with up close.

About

Iris Doulou paints in heavy texture and saturated colour. Her surfaces are built up by knife and brush until the paint itself carries the subject — water breaking into foam, a leaf catching fire. The atelier keeps a small, deliberate body of work: each canvas is one of one, signed, and sold directly from the studio with a certificate of authenticity.

Work I“The Ocean”

Teal water breaking into thick white surf, built in heavy impasto.

A high, aerial view of water caught at the moment the surf turns. Deep teal sweeps across the upper canvas in long, curving strokes, then breaks along a diagonal into a wide band of white impasto built up so thickly the foam stands off the surface in ridges. Flecks of white scatter across the blue like light on a moving sea; close up, the paint reads as much like weather and sand as like brushwork.

Work II“Nature’s Whisper”

A flame-coloured leaf, scattered flowers, and a butterfly on a red impasto ground.

A single leaf burns at the centre of a deep red field, worked in molten orange and gold with its veins cut in as raised ridges of paint. Above it, a loose cluster of small purple and pink flowers; to one side, a butterfly with finely textured, glinting wings. The red ground is laid on in thick, restless palette-knife strokes, so the whole surface holds the light and seems to move.
